Roger Saul, creator of fashion label Mulberry, organic food brand Sharpham Park and historic car racer, organised Sunday’s Start UK Eco Car Spectacular and together with Kevin McCloud, British designer, author and television presenter were the key people in making it happen.

The rally began at the top of The Mall by Buckingham Palace, with a race between Roger in the the Westfield iRACER and Kevin in the Citroen Survolt, followed by a parade of bicycles, motor bikes, kit cars created by school children, scooters, smaller electric vehicles including Think City, Smart fortwo and G Wiz, plus the racy TAG Heuer Tesla Roadster, all enjoyed by the crowds on a sunny sunday afternoon in London.

There was also a static display where you could chat to the exhibitors in-between the two parades, plus a prizegiving ceremony led by Roger Saul and Kevin McCloud, where after a few hiccups no-one seemed to quite know who had won what, but the winners included Citroen for its Survolt electric racing car, Tesla and TAG Heuer for their round-the-world exploits, and Mitsubishi for the i-MiEV!

Personalities who enjoyed driving the vehicles included Sir Stirling Moss, Quentin Willson, Lisa Rogers, Robert Llewellyn, Gabi Roslin, Dame Ellen Macarthur, and the former ‘Stig’ from Top Gear – Perry McCarthy.

The Start Eco Car Spectacular was part of HRH The Prince of Wales’ sustainability initiative ‘Start’, which is presenting positive steps to leading a sustainable lifestyle, and a high profile and fun way to show green cars to the people of London. www.startecocars.com
